Even though animal husbandry and agriculture are the main occupation of the people, nearly 78% of the families income come from “other” sources; mainly through wage employment in labour oriented Govt. relief works opened during famine years. The Trust believes that the way out of rural poverty is through cottage and small scale industry. Apart from introducing improved agricultural and animal husbandry practices, due emphasis should be given to identify other need based and area based activities of income generation. Training and capacity building in the identified trades are imperative to develop talent and skills and to enhance productivity. .

For generating alternative sources of income, training programmes have been organised in the trades of cutting and tailoring, electric house wiring, motor rewinding, soap and detergent making, vaseline and candle making and paper bag making. Two destitutes persons have been assisted to establish trade shops of domestic size flour mill. So far, a total expenditure of Rs. 50,028/- has been incurred on this activity out of which 37% has come through the beneficiary community. Many families which are in a process of establishing these trades, on small scale basis, are expected to be benefited.

Four Women Dairy Milk Cooperative Societies have been established and linked with Saras Dairy Jodhpur. Total expenditure incurred on this line item is Rs. 1,32,00/- out of which 68% has been mobilized by the community. The dairy movement has caught the imagination of the community especially the women. By linking the movement with Saras Dairy, this activity is going to be sustained in the future due to its monitory benefits. Dairy Cooperative Society of a village has a potential of generating an average yearly revenue of Rs. one lac.

Three farm poultries with a bird population of 40 to 50 each have been established. Total expenditure incurred on this activity is Rs. 30,000/- out of which 50% has been contributed by the beneficiary community. The activity has proved to be an additional source of income to landless persons. A small poultry with a population of 40 to 50 birds is expected to generate a net income of Rs. 15,000/- per month.
